Slices

There once was a boy who was very humble and obedient to his parents. He followed every order and every task to please them. He asked nothing more than two slices of cakes having the flavors of chocolate and vanilla. This little gift brought delight to the boy however, he only eats one of the slices. He never managed to even taste both. At first, his parents ignored this but year after year, this was the common scenario. The boy always asked the same gift for his birthday; grade school, high school and college graduation and other celebrations. This puzzled his parents for years but they were afraid that the boy might be offended if they asked the boy's reasons for this. The parents feared the consequences of confronting the boy. Everything appeared to be fine for all of those years, so they just ignored this. Until such time that the boy acquired a very serious disease, the doctors warned the parents to cherish every moment because the boy has only a few weeks left to live. They spent every moment in happiness and as usual, the boy asked for the same gift for every happy event. Still, the boy only ate one slice and left the other untouched. Finally, their parents decided to ask the boy his reasons for such a gift for so long during the time of his last minutes.t Sadly, the boy reached his final breath without even saying his reasons. Everything ended so fast. This haunted the parents for the rest of their lives. They never knew what was with those slices that kept the boy happy for all of those years. In addition, they were not able to know why the boy never touched the other half of the pair of cake slices.

What are the reason/s of the boy for such a gift? Which do you think among the two slices of cakes did the boy left untouched? Share your thoughts...

Remember, keep it sweet... :D

  3. aaaw. i think he was waiting for his parents to have the other slice because what made his reward a sweeter pleasure was the fact that he could share those happy moments with them.

  5. Vanilla and Chocolate have the opposite colors -- white and black. Going back to the article, the boy was very obedient and submissive...so we should expect him to be nice. Since white represents good values, he probably just ate the white slice because the boy has this "flawless" characteristics. It's a sign of him being good. The black wasn't eaten because, most likely, the boy hasn't done any maladies in life. So we should expect him to eat just the white slice.

  6. lol if the last 3 comments are true then the kid sharing the black cake with his parents would symbolize that the parents are the opposite of what Jak said the white symbolizes: good

  7. Thanks guys for the insights and comments. The ending allows the reader to continue or conclude the story. The reader's interpretation also somehow reflects his/her personality. There are no wrong answers...

Here is how I answered the open questions:
There is no way to know which cake was left untouched. The readers now share the feeling of the parents whom were not able to ask the answer directly from their son. The cure is to conclude the story with your own interpretation.

I like fox kiddo and Jak's insights, they were able to think out of the box. I dare you to make your own ending...

  14. so many people going hungry in the streets and here we have a kid who wastes a perfectly good slice of cake.

why didnt he eat the cake? Well the story said he was sick so maybe it was because of his sickness. mental disease perhaps. why else would anyone waste a perfectly good piece of cake? and wait a minute, why ask for the same cake again and again?

hmmmmmmmmm reckon hes probably mad like a hatter.

The boy's reason's in eating the cakes include: birthday celebrations, important events like graduation, and after following his parents' errands and tasks. Analysing in a different angle, it is very evident that the boy eats his favourite cake on these important occasions of his life. These occasions revolve around: significant events, achievements, and celebrations. It simply means that the boy puts the same value of eating cakes and his life's highlights. Eating only one piece of cake and leaving the other piece untouched could mean one thing. It could be inferred that the boy eats the first piece as a celebration of his success of achievement, and leaves the other untouched as a memory of that particular important chapter of his life. It is, nevertheless, mentioned in the story that the other cake left untouched is thrown away.

Just an assumption. I will research more on the symbology of cakes, particularly, chocolate and vanilla, and their joint meanings.

  16. Just a thought: It's pretty peculiar for a parent to find it hard to ask their son a simple question like why he does not eat the other slice of cake. I don't see any grave and reasonable consequence that myt arise from them asking such a simple question.

The cake could actually symbolize his sacrifice. I mean, he could've eaten both but he opted to just consume one. Maybe he wanted to share to other slice to his parents. That's all I can think of. :p
